Now that you know how to use the VarieHook to make shells and clusters, the next basic stitch to try is the puff stitch. Puffs have a smooth, almost satiny appearance, because they are made entirely from loops and wraps, with no partial stitch between them.

To create a puff, you'll yarn over before drawing up a loop in a stitch. Then yarn over and draw up more loops, all in the same stitch. When you have enough (usually 3-4 draws) you'll YO and pull through all of the stitches.

With a traditional hook, the puff stitch can get very tight and dense, because all of the loops are shaft sized. It's also difficult to pull the head through so many tight wraps without catching the head. To make a looser puff, the crocheter usually has to pull up evenly sized loops, both before and after taking up the YO. You'd need to keep all the loops the same size throughout each step of the stitch, and then make all the puffs the same size throughout your piece.

With the VarieHook, all that guesswork is eliminated by our multiple shafts! For a nicely rounded puff, simply wrap all your loops on the medium shaft. For a large, luxurious puff, the large shaft will make your work easy, fast, and fun!
